Its hard to leave the ones you love.....

He leaves behind his laptop today as to not get it too close the fire. The jackal ends up locked in a supply closet with out his eyes and ears. The horror. Please reunite these two soon.

Marginalizing Genius.

How brave and comforting he is here.
Robert Guza head writer is not been one of my favorite people when it comes to General Hospital. I completely disagree with many of the directions he has taken the show. His disregard of history (killing off Alan and Georgie for stupid reasons for example) and his understanding of what the viewers really like. I will say he had done one thing right in his tenure. Damian Spinelli; The Jackal. A remarkable character that was a the perfect storm of a quirky writing and a brilliant actor.

He should have stopped were he was head on this feat. Instead they have made a faux copy of the Jackal. She may strangely mimic his mannerism and voice patterns. (Senta is don't a commendable job with the garage) she is NOT Damian Spinelli. He is not some cookie cutter formula you can copy and call it a day. Damian Spinelli would be one of the most annoying characters on the show save for one very important unduplicatable ingredient, Bradford Anderson.

Winnie- "I will have you, see I can be just like you. You will be mine" Jackal- "Umm I don't know about that.

To top the day with a big bitter rotten tomato we got treated with this:

Eww, What where the writers thinking? Were they thinking? Agent Leeds you barely know the Jackal stop acting like your leaving your beloved behind. Your an FBI agent. You should be stronger then THIS. eww. When you juxtapose this scene with Lucky's and Elizabeth's scene it makes it even more vile.

If Spinelli is one of Guza's greatest creations then what does it make Agent Winnie? I venture to say she is getting close to rivaling Logan.

The complexities of being a character fan first in a couple fan world

I am a Spinelli fan first. What that means is through every potential storyline and paring I support and enjoy Spinelli first. An example being I could easily throw Maxie under a bus if she burns my Spinelli. I am watching you bad blonde one.

Well Spinelli has found himself into a major couple fanbase. This scares me. As a supporter of a character I want no door closed. If it Spixie or nothing I don't think i could watch. I have to believe there is hope for Spam and Spliz. I need to respect this friendship with Winnie no matter how much it pains me.

I remember the days when we wished Lulu would just give Spin a date and take him seriously.

I love Spixie and I am still hopeful we will get there but i refuse to not enjoy my Spin during the journey.

the fan blog interviews a viewer.

its a safe bet to call her an off-liner.

Wicked Good - SOD February 17, 2009

there is an interview with Bradford Anderson and Kirsten Storms in the Soap Opera Digest that goes on sale today dated February 17

Its wicked good......

a hero with no moral compass.....

First lets state a fact. Spinelli is a hero. He will put his own safety aside to help others. He has been this way from the very beginning. Going into the Metrocourt while its under hostage control, pushing Maxie to the side and getting hit by a car, and today pushing an acquaintance out of danger when he realized the OR was going to explode. He has other instances of being a hero but these are the biggest examples.

Something else struck me today with Spinelli sporting that fashionable biohazard suit today and having the talk with Agent Winnifred . Damian Spinelli has no moral compass. First lets looks to who he looks to for whats right and wrong.

See the problem here? Spinelli never developed a firm sense of right and wrong growing up and even now he looks at two people who are perhaps the most conflicted in Port Charles on this issue.
He really believed it would be better to go against the FBI to protect 'innocents" (He could actually in the end have been right) He thought it was ok to go into a biotoxin contaminated room to steals balls filled with biotoxin and risk the deal that Jason sacrificed for HIM. What was he hoping to do with them? Use them on Johnny and Matt? (I assume he was going ot destroy them but thats just funny to say)

What will it take for him to know rights right and wrong himself?

Today has a lot over the top crazy moments but even in that I can see the gem that is Damian Spinelli.

Heh. Hehe.

*grins widely* Sorry, B. It was too tempting to resist.

Unique Mourning

I apologize in advance, this is not my usual snarky silliness. I decided to talk about a legitimate concern I have for the show. These are just things I need to have down in writing.

So it is obvious that the clever, clever people in charge of the show had the "lyke, totally awesome!" idea to make Winifred a Spinelli clone. Winelli, as I call her, did not come on in the beginning to be a carbon copy of The Jackal, but has since been altered. Now, she speaks Jackalese perfectly, nerding her way around the show like Spinelli's twin.

I, for one, couldn't be more pissed.

Did they really think that making her just like him would do her any favors? Did they think it was cute? Did they pat themselves on the back saying they were just so smart, making a nerdy girl even nerdier?

Why does this upset me so much? Because, Bradford made that character, not the writers. Anyone can get his dialog and read it, and they will not have the soul and charm that Bradford has when in character. If anyone else was in that role, it would fail. It would fail, miserably, and Spinelli would have been an explosion victim or strangled by the TMK, just more collateral damage.

With his portrayal, fans have spent two years trying to figure out his mystery--who is this person, this odd man, that came from Tennessee in a burst of energy and stuck around only to become a most beloved character? People spend hours debating whether or not Spinelli has a personality disorder, a traumatic childhood, a combination of both. People debate who his parents are, where he comes from, why is he like that? He is an enigma, a rare thing on General Hospital these days, when secrets seem to be exposed as soon as they are created. One thing fans all agree on--whatever his back story is, it is juicy.

This is all due to Bradford's portrayal, because the character developed a soul through him. The writers have put off developing his back story for two years now, so any discussion of "who he is" has been based strictly off of small portions of dialog, conspiracy theories of clever fans, and the resounding power of Bradford's performance. He takes Spinelli's cartoonish design and gives him arms, and legs, and a soulful gaze, and a deep heart...And the list goes on and on.

By bringing Winifred on, the writers have said that this character, this Spinelli, this young man that for two years has seemed so unique and special...He is easily copied.

Thanks, GH. Thanks. That's costly and unintelligent logic. That's the same logic that the creators of The Matrix used when they decided that film needed a sequel. Or two.

Think of it this way: Take the role of House from Fox's medical drama of the same name. He is a drug addicted, snarky, genius doctor that always solves the case in time before a patient dies. This is a role that is driven by the astounding acting fortitude of Hugh Laurie. The show itself is pretty formulaic, almost redundant. The cumulative narrative is always the same--Patient comes in sick, gets worse, almost dies, but is saved by a clever clue into their lives. How has this show lasted 5 years with that sort of constant set up? It's simple--You can copy the story a thousand times, but something Hugh Laurie does with the role of House makes him special and unique each week.

Are you trying to tell me it's a good idea for Fox to hire an actress for a drug addicted, handicapped, snarky but genius doctor to play opposite him? Doesn't that take away from his uniqueness? Would it not be insulting? For so long, people have been desperate to figure out this strange creature that is Damian Spinelli, only for the writers to decide that he's not as special as we thought. Where does that leave us long time fans of the character? Not to mention the fact that Bradford Anderson spent two years developing and working his way through the canvas making Spinelli who he is, only for those in charge to essentially say "Good work! Thanks! We'll be doing a quick copy & paste job with this new chick, OK?"

I could pull my hair out, honestly. I'm not one to get overly offended when the writers make choices for things, but this sort of inherent laziness is astounding. There was no possible way for them to leave Winifred alone and let her develop on her own? I don't even think she's necessary to the canvas, but if she has to stick around because of some connection they've made with her, why are they doing THIS?

Also, let's touch on an equally offensive topic. Since Winifred has been brought on, people have been assuming she's going to somehow be angst for Spinelli and Maxie, some even going so far as to suggest she will be their end, no matter if Spinelli and Maxie have been building a steady fanbase for a year! This wreaks of a containment attitude--of keeping certain types of people with their own kind for the "greater good", a demeaning set of standards for society. I'm sorry, but I do not watch General Hospital to for math. These perfectly calculated formulaic concepts of "Boy Nerd + Girl Nerd = Nerd Love" and "Hottie + Hottiette = Hot Love" won't keep me as a viewer, mainly because of it's insulting nature. It's insulting to me as a human with good old fashioned feelings, and as a television student who takes a lack of creativity offensively.

So, if even the slightest whiff of Spinelli/Winifred hooking up after a year of buildup with Spinelli and Maxie shows up on my screens, I'm gone. For real, I have no reason to watch that sort of abuse. I won't watch a show that tells me there should not be any intermixing of personalities, that things should be safe. I want to watch a brave, gutsy General Hospital, the GH spirit I've known my whole life. General Hospital was the show brave enough to give a legacy character like Robin AIDS, to make Jason brain damaged and keep him that way, that even had the audacity (and thankfully so, because of what it brought to the canvas) to have a rape develop into a love story.

That's the General Hospital I will watch. Spinelli and Maxie work because of an extreme chemistry, not to be confused with formulas. I'm talking about real science, two chemicals combining and combusting and making pretty, sparkly lights. If General Hospital doesn't have the guts to develop that, they are not deserving of their own rich history and acclaim, because they are no longer the show with any bravery, choosing cookie cutter pieces that go down easy and challenge nothing.

Now, I can't predict the future, and I don't know if that's where things will go, but I do know that it will be the end of my relationship with General Hospital. I will mourn it like I mourn all good shows that come to an end, because in my eyes that will be the death of GH. I pray I don't have to go to two creative funerals this year, because I'm already preparing myself to mourn the uniqueness of Spinelli being murdered in cold blood.

There is a faint heartbeat still left for his uniqueness, something I will hold onto desperately, hoping what made Spinelli special to me isn't quite dead yet. That faint heartbeat is the factor that has kept him alive for this long--Bradford Anderson.

Soap Cruise '09 Recap

My friend Stephanie who went to the Soap Cruise last weekend has allowed me to share with you her recap.
She is someone I have a great deal of respect for. A few months ago she came back from a deployment in Iraq and this woman fixes helicopters. That pretty high on the coolness scale at least in my world.

Soap Cruise '09 Recap

After going through security and finding our stateroom, we wandered down to the Soap Cruise Registration/Check in and first Meet and Greet with the stars. The crowd was thick but it was a very intimate setting. The room was a small ballroom/bar and all the stars were there except for Ricky Paul Goldin who had to work and would later join us in Key West. Also not there was Alicia Minshew who was filming scenes and was unable to attend.

Bradford was there of course as was his girlfriend Kiera. She is really pretty and was very sweet in the brief second I spoke to her. I mentioned that they looked tired and she said they took the red-eye in. Bradford was a sweetheart and knew who I was when I mentioned that I was the girl that wrote him from Iraq. I didn’t talk to him for too long because there were other people waiting and he seemed tired - sweet, but tired. Basically, he asked if I was glad I was back – I am. Lol. And I got a picture with him.

Then we moved on to Cameron Matheson who was very kind and very good-looking. I got my picture with him and told him my best friend Michele was a huge fan of his from Dancing With the Stars so he said “Well this picture is for Michele then.”

Then we waited for Greg Vaughn. He really was a very sweet guy. And someone truly wupped up on him with the purrty stick. He chatted with G for a minute or so, then he chatted with me – asked me where I was from and I told him that I was from NY but stationed in Kansas. So we talked about the deployment thing – he knows some people that lost relatives. He was really nice. He wanted to know if I wanted an autograph – so I was like “Uh – yeah sure.” But my book was not turned to his picture and so we had to look in it to find him. And he joked that I was not prepared as we both looked in the booklet. Then there were some girls in line waiting that were very rude and making nasty comments about how “yeah – she should have been prepared – that is how it is done.” and how long we were chatting. Then G shot them her special patented combination Mom-slash-Step-theBLEEP-off-
Beyotch look and they shut up. LOL - YAY G – my defender. You could also tell Greg was not too thrilled with their comments because he proceeded to chat longer and sort of pull me back from them. LOL.

All the other stars were there. But we did not talk to any of them at that time.

That evening we were sitting talking to some of the press people (who, by the way were cool and awesome!) and Bradford walked by and waved goodnight.

Later we saw several stars at the tables in the casino. They looked like they were having fun.

We went to Key West the next day and G and I shopped and there was a very pretty Israeli guy in one of the stores that flirted shamelessly with us to try to get us to buy something. LOL. (Later on in the cruise G told me that I am the “United Nations of Flirting.” LOL – I have NO IDEA what she is talking about! ;) )

The next event was the so-called trivia game/meet and greet. The whole thing was ridiculously poorly organized. This was not necessarily the actor’s fault but they did not seem to know what they were supposed to do. They made Bradford do his Bradford/Spinelli/Bradford transformation. Nadia Bjorlin told all the guys to turn around so we could see who had the nicest butt – several of them complied including Bradford. (I have to say, his was nice – lol) But the rest of the event was weird. Bradford said virtually nothing but was talking to Jacob Young and Greg Vaughn on the stage. The only question he was asked was who wrote his lines. He said “oddly enough – the writers.” LOL. He didn’t say it in a mean way – and the asker laughed because she realized it was kinda a silly question after all. But he gave his standard answer like the writers were nerds trying to show how many big words they knew. Christian LeBlanc and Austin Peck were the loudmouths and were very funny. Greg Vaughan mentioned that Lucky and Sam were pretty much done and that Lucky and Liz were probably getting back together. There was much audience reaction to this. He mentioned that he got more airtime with Sam though but seemed resigned.

The meet and greet afterwards was nice. I waited to talk to Bradford and this time, he asked lots of questions about my deployment and the Army. He was really inquisitive actually! I was neglectful and didn’t ask anything about the show. Then there were other people waiting so I said my goodbyes.

That night was formal night and the stars had a private dinner so they weren’t in the dining room but we did see Bradford at the elevators later. He saw G and I and coming down the stairs – he complimented us saying “you look beautiful!” – we blushed and reveled in the glow. But we then bantered that it was formal night and that everyone looked beautiful. ☺

The next day we went to Cozumel – the Mayan ruins were amazing and the tour guide Jesus, was incredibly knowledgeable about history and the site. I want to take my son back there some day.

The next day was the Soap Scenes and the Bingo game. We did not attend either – due to getting up kinda late, wanting breakfast (I need my bacon and coffee) and forgetting to set our clocks back. Oh well. We got to the Bingo game towards the end when the guys were playing with the soundboard and goofing off. Then there was another meet and greet.

I spoke briefly with Bradford again – it is weird to me that I was completely comfortable talking to him. He really set me at ease and was interesting to talk to – so much so that I kept forgetting to ask him anything about the show. I asked if they had a chance to go to Cozumel – They went on the horseback trip. I told him about the Talum ruins. G took a picture. Then I left him so he could talk to the other people waiting.

Ricky Paul Goldin showed up on Saturday night and there was a meet and greet with him – it was supposed to be a “dance party” but it really didn’t turn out that way. (Again, I was not really impressed with the organization of the events.) We went because Myrha is a fan of his – by the time we got there, only he and Christian LeBlanc were still there. I spoke very briefly with RPG and then we talked with CL for a bit – he is really funny – then one of the guys covering the event came over with a video camera and wanted us to do a promo – the other girls were shy and CL was hopped up on Sudafed so I did the promo – I cannot wait to see it. (I say that with extreme sarcasm!)

I told CL that he was a charmer and that while I don’t watch his show now, I might have to start.

The cocktail party was incredibly crowded and the room was hot. All the stars were there and so it was really crazy.

I was able to talk to Kiera for quite a while. She was very nice and fun to talk to. We talked about all sorts of things. She told me that she watches GH when Bradford is not there – LOL I guess he gets squidgy about watching it with her there – I don’t know if he watches on his own or not. ☺ Bradford tried to come over to join in the conversation but kept getting pulled away by people wanting pictures, etc. He was quite busy. Then someone wanted a pic with her and Bradford together so I wandered over to talk to some of the people that we had gotten to know including Devin Owens who writes for Soap Opera Digest covering B&B and Y&R – he is a doll and was the most fun to talk to. His story about his interview with one of my idols, Donnie Osmond was fascinating. G and I miss him terribly.

I decided to go and say goodbye to Bradford and was able to have a lovely talk with him. He really is a kind and genuine person. I was happy to get to meet him finally. I finally remembered to talk to him about GH. He was excited about the work he has been doing and the stuff coming up.

I have to say that I am more a fan of Bradford than before – not because of his work on the show – but because he was so great to his fans, interesting to talk to and kind in general.

Our last dinner was bittersweet. We closed down the dining room. Bradford and Kiera waved goodbye as they left.

We will miss the people we met on the ship like Myrha, another fan we met onboard and our wait staff Jorge, Anton and Tipi as well as Cathi who worked at Cova Café and Vincy our cabin concierge.

To G: “Hola Poppy!!”

Random impressions:

The actors were so impossibly beautiful that I am pretty certain George Lucas and Industrial Light and Magic were involved in some way.

Greg Vaughn is very genuine and was so wonderful to all his fans – spending extra time with them, smiling all the time. I am a bigger fan now than before.

The mean girls who were making rude comments while I was trying to talk to Greg showed up at our table the second night (ugh). One was hawking her shoe invention and her friend was “friendly” with anyone she could be. And while I could say a lot of things about them – if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all – so I will leave it at that. ;)

Random sightings:

Rode in elevator with Windsor Harmon and had to tell him where the casino was, though I had seen him there on several occasions.

Leslie Kay and Don Diamante in the Sushi bar/salad bar dining room having dinner with their families. They were a couple tables away. Leslie’s boys are adorable. Several fans stopped to talk to them but we left them alone.

Spotted Cameron Mattheson in Key West with his family.

Jacob Young was getting back on the boat from Cozumel at the same time we were. He and his brother-in-Law were goofing around and yelling “Hey Chloe!! Hey Chloe!!” I think it was alluding to the fact that someone had asked Nadia Bjorlin a question the day before but called her by her character name, Chloe – that is my and G’s impression anyway.

The actors liked the casino and that was the place to be to see them. Greg, Windsor, Jay Johnson, Brandon Beemer, Nadia Bjorlin and Bradford were seen there more than once. We also spoke with Don Diamante and his wife briefly. Very nice people.

Greg Vaughn likes his hat.

And that was about it!

Two years Later

I didn't always love Spinelli. Surprising isn't it? There is one scene from January 29, 2007 that still stands out for me. Its the scene that 'woke' me up to Bradford's great skill in acting. This was the begining of my fan girl journey.

For Your Benefit

During this crisis, I thought it would be helpful to have an color coded advisory system in place for your benefit.

Red--Severe--"We couldn't contain it", Dr. Drake yells with anguish regarding a biotoxin...Best advice? Find a place to hide through sweeps.

Orange--High--Agent Raynor referred to the biotoxin as bad ass deadly stuff, and that should tell you just how bad ass the threat is.

Yellow--Elevated--Typical day in Port Charles, a town always at risk for the stray bullet or explosion.

Blue--Guarded--Not a terribly threatening day, Max and Milo being your body guards should do the trick when it comes to protection.

Green--Low--Things are generally cool, though the occasion burst of wacky hijinks should be expected. Look out for Jackal PI working on a new case. If you hear the wacky hijinks theme, be warned, it is eminent.

Be careful, PC residents!

Fun Screencaps

Today's show was good...I guess Spinelli will be doing the usual *tap on keyboard to avert disaster* thing.
This screencap amuses me...It's like he's saying "Hallelujah, can it be?!" ...I love a good screencap.

And I just like Spinelli's hair in this next one. Good angles. Is that another penguin logo on his shirt? What's with all the penguins?

That is all, folks.
