If they were to introduce a new character to be Spinelli's father, I'd want Matthew Ashford (Jack, DAYS) to play him. Spinelli's charm and chemistry with Maxie kind of reminds me of Jack and Jennifer.
Ashford used to play Tom Hardy who at one time dated Felicia.
Yeah, I agree, that or "Moonlighting" quirky PI Dave and fashion model Maddie is probably the closest they come too as far as how the two of them are together. Jack/Jen were truly hilarious together and very sparkly/smart. Both couples had wonderful chemistry.
Although humorous, I think Spixie are more poignant than any of them, really-- they are just a force of their own. I love them.
